  1.                     HOW THE KERATOMETER WORKS

  3. The keratometer treats the cornea 
  4. as a convex mirror.  A pattern, 
  5. called mires, of known size are 
  6. reflected off the cornea.  The mire 
  7. pattern used with the keratometer 
  8. is a circle with plus signs on each 
  9. side in the horizontal meridian 
  10. and a line (minus sign) top and 
  11. bottom.

  13. The mire pattern is formed by a 
  14. plate on the front of the keratometer 
  15. which is opaque except for the 
  16. transparent pattern which is illuminated 
  17. from behind by a mirror at a 45 degree 
  18. angle which reflects the light from the 
  19. bulb below the axis of the instrument.
